Frequently Ask Questions
What is a Blood Culture and Sensitivity (C&S) test?
This is a two-part laboratory test. The Culture part involves growing the bacteria or fungi from your blood sample to identify the exact cause of an infection. The Sensitivity part tests various antibiotics against those germs to see which one is most effective at killing them.
Why do I need this test if I already had a CRP test?
A CRP test tells us that you have inflammation or infection, but it doesn’t tell us what is causing it. The Culture and Sensitivity test provides the “missing link”—it identifies the specific germ so your doctor can prescribe a targeted antibiotic rather than a general one.
When is a Blood Culture test usually recommended?
It is typically ordered when a patient has a high, persistent fever, chills, rapid heart rate, or confusion. It is the gold standard for diagnosing sepsis (blood poisoning) and ensuring that serious infections are treated correctly.
How long does it take to get the results?
Unlike a routine blood count, a culture takes time because we have to “grow” the bacteria. Preliminary results are often available in 24–48 hours, but a final “No Growth” confirmation can take up to 5 days.
Do I need to fast before a Culture and Sensitivity test?
No, fasting is not required. You can eat and drink normally. However, it is crucial to tell your nurse if you have already started taking antibiotics, as this can sometimes prevent the bacteria from growing in the lab.
Can I get this test done at my home or hotel in Dubai?
Yes. We provide 24/7 at-home blood collection. Our DHA-licensed nurses bring sterile collection kits to your location, ensuring the sample is not contaminated and is transported immediately to the lab for incubation.
What does it mean if the result is "Sensitive," "Intermediate," or "Resistant"?
Sensitive (S): The antibiotic is effective at stopping the infection.
Intermediate (I): The antibiotic might work, but may require a higher dose.
Resistant (R): The antibiotic will not work against this specific bacteria.
Why is "Sensitivity" testing important?
With the rise of antibiotic resistance, “trial and error” with medication can be dangerous. This test ensures you are not taking a drug that the bacteria can ignore, which leads to faster recovery and fewer side effects.
Is the blood collection for a culture different from a normal blood test?
The process is similar, but the skin must be cleaned more thoroughly with an antiseptic to ensure no skin bacteria enter the sample. In some cases, the nurse may need to take two samples from different sites to ensure accuracy.
What if my culture result comes back as "No Growth"?
A “No Growth” result usually means there are no bacteria in your bloodstream. This is a good sign! It may mean your infection is viral (which antibiotics won’t help) or that the infection is localized in a different part of the body (like the lungs or urinary tract) rather than the blood.
