What Is a Cancer Marker Test?
Cancer markers — also called tumour markers — are proteins that circulate in your blood and can rise when certain cancers are present. In women they also rise for a long list of entirely ordinary reasons, from a period to a pregnancy. A cancer marker screen measures six of them from one sample, so you have a documented baseline and a doctor's read on whether anything is worth a closer look.
Markers
One Blood Sample, Six Markers
A single serum sample measures CEA, CA 15.3, CA 19.9, CA 125, AFP and Beta HCG — the six markers most relevant to women — in one appointment, with no fasting needed.
A cancer marker test measures specific proteins in your blood — substances that certain cancers can release, and that many completely normal conditions release too.
This is a screening aid, not a diagnosis — and for women that distinction matters more than most people realise. A raised marker does not mean you have cancer, and a normal marker does not rule it out. What these six values give you is a documented baseline and an early prompt: a result outside the expected range is a signal to investigate further with imaging, a specialist, or a repeat test. That is how a doctor uses them, and it is how we present them to you.
The MedCall panel covers the six markers most relevant to women. CEA relates to the colon and other gastrointestinal cancers. CA 15.3 is associated with breast tissue. CA 19.9 relates to the pancreas and bile ducts. CA 125 is the marker most often linked to the ovaries. AFP relates to the liver, and Beta HCG to germ cell and placental tissue.
Two things are worth knowing before you book. First, this panel does not replace your mammogram or your cervical screening — those remain the tests with the strongest evidence behind them, and no blood marker substitutes for either. Second, CA 125 in particular is easily disturbed by endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and even where you are in your cycle, while Beta HCG and AFP both rise in pregnancy. A number read without that context frightens people for no reason, which is why every MedCall report includes a free doctor review.
What the Cancer Marker Screen Measures
Each marker points to a different part of the body. Below is what every one of them actually measures, and just as importantly, what else can move it. All six are processed at DHA-approved laboratories and reviewed by a doctor.
CEA
Carcinoembryonic Antigen
Most associated with colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers, and used widely to monitor them. Also raised by smoking, inflammatory bowel conditions and liver disease.
CA 15.3
Cancer Antigen 15-3
Associated with breast tissue, and used mainly to monitor a known breast cancer rather than to find one. It also rises with benign breast conditions and liver disease.
CA 19.9
Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9
Linked to the pancreas and biliary tract. It also rises with pancreatitis, gallstones and jaundice, and a small share of people never produce it at all — context is everything.
CA 125
Cancer Antigen 125
The marker most often linked to the ovaries — and the most easily disturbed on this panel. Endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic infection and even your menstrual cycle can all lift it without any cancer being present.
AFP
Alpha-Fetoprotein
Associated with primary liver cancer and with germ cell tumours of the ovary. Also elevated in hepatitis and cirrhosis — and routinely raised during pregnancy.
Beta HCG
Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin
Linked to germ cell and placental tumours. It is also the hormone a pregnancy test measures — so if you are pregnant, or recently were, this marker will be high and that is entirely normal.
Why every card names a benign cause. Cancer markers are not exclusive to cancer, and in women the ordinary explanations are especially common — a cycle, a cyst, a pregnancy. Reading one number in isolation is how people end up frightened by a result that meant nothing. Your MedCall report is reviewed by a doctor who reads all six together, alongside your history, cycle and symptoms, and tells you plainly whether anything needs following up.

Our coordinator arranges everything — panel, timing, nurse, results — most patients are booked and confirmed in under 10 minutes. No clinic visit, no fasting, no waiting room.
How to Prepare for Your Cancer Marker Test
There is no fasting and no complicated preparation. But several ordinary things in a woman's life — a period, a pregnancy, a known cyst — can lift these markers on their own. Telling us about them takes two minutes and changes how your result is read.
Why this section exists. A falsely raised CA 125 is one of the most common reasons women end up in an anxious cycle of repeat scans and referrals for something entirely benign. Most providers never mention it. We would rather your result meant something the first time.
Eat and Drink Normally
No fasting is required for any of the six markers. Have your usual breakfast, coffee and water, and book whatever time of day suits you.
Tell Us Where You Are in Your Cycle
CA 125 can rise around menstruation. It does not stop you testing — but the doctor needs to know, so a cycle-related reading is not mistaken for something else.
Tell Us If You Are, or Might Be, Pregnant
Beta HCG is the pregnancy hormone and AFP rises in pregnancy too. Both will read high and that is completely normal — but only if the doctor knows to expect it.
Mention Endometriosis, Fibroids or Cysts
All three commonly raise CA 125 with no cancer involved. If you already have one of these diagnoses, saying so upfront saves you a needless scare later.
Wait Out a Pelvic or Urine Infection
Pelvic inflammation and urinary infections can push CA 125 up sharply. If you have pain, burning, urgency or fever, get that treated first, then test.
Mention Medications and Recent Procedures
Recent pelvic or abdominal surgery can affect these markers, and high-dose biotin supplements can interfere with certain lab assays. A quick mention keeps your result readable.
Not Sure If Something Applies to You? Ask First.
Our coordinator will run through the short checklist with you before your visit — cycle, pregnancy, known conditions, medications — so your sample is taken at the right time and your result is one you can actually trust. It takes two minutes and costs nothing.
Understanding Your Results
A cancer marker report is a set of numbers next to a reference range — and read alone, it frightens people unnecessarily. Here is honestly what each outcome means, and what happens next in each case.
Reference ranges differ between laboratories. Cut-off values depend on the assay and the analyser used, so always read your result against the range printed on your own report — not against a figure found online. Your MedCall doctor review does exactly this for you.
All Six Within Range
The most common result. It is reassuring, and it gives you a documented baseline to compare against in future. It is not a guarantee that no cancer exists — some cancers never raise these markers — so keep up your mammogram and cervical screening. Most women repeat the panel in twelve months.
One Marker Slightly Raised
Far more common than people expect, and usually benign — especially CA 125, which moves with the cycle and with conditions like endometriosis. The standard next step is not panic; it is a repeat test after a few weeks, because a value that settles tells a very different story from one that keeps climbing.
A Marker Clearly Elevated
This is a signal to investigate, not a diagnosis. Our doctor calls you, explains which marker and what it points to, and refers you onward — typically to imaging, a gynaecologist, or a specialist. You are told what to do next in plain language, not left holding a PDF.
What Else Can Raise Each Marker — Besides Cancer
Every one of these six markers can rise for reasons that have nothing to do with cancer, and in women several of those reasons are extremely common. This is why a doctor reads them together with your history — and why we publish it openly rather than leaving you to search for it at midnight.
Your results explained by a doctor. Included, not extra.
Every MedCall cancer marker report comes with a doctor review at no additional cost. You will not be handed a page of numbers and left to interpret it yourself.
Who Should Consider a Cancer Marker Screen
This panel is not for everyone, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a test you do not need. It is most useful for women in the situations below — where a baseline, or a value tracked over time, genuinely adds something.
Women Over 40 Wanting a Baseline
Risk for several cancers climbs from the forties onward. A first set of values now becomes the reference point every future test is measured against — and a trend is worth far more than any single reading.
A Family History of Cancer
If breast, ovarian, colorectal or pancreatic cancer runs in your family, most doctors suggest starting the conversation earlier — and tracking values from a younger age than the general recommendation.
Known BRCA or Very Strong Family History
This panel is not enough on its own. If you carry a BRCA variant or have a strong family pattern, you need genetic counselling and a proper surveillance programme with imaging. We will say so rather than take the booking.
Persistent Bloating or Pelvic Changes
Ongoing bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, or a change in appetite that will not settle. These are usually benign — but they should be assessed by a doctor, with CA 125 as one part of that picture rather than the whole of it.
Known Liver Conditions
Hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease or cirrhosis all change how AFP should be read. If you are living with any of these, tell us when booking so the doctor interprets your result in the right context.
Tracking a Previous Result
If a marker came back borderline before, repeating the same panel is how you find out whether it settled or is trending upward. Direction of travel is the most useful thing these numbers can tell you.
What This Test Does Not Do
Most providers only tell you what a test can do. Knowing where a cancer marker panel stops being useful matters just as much — because that is what stops a normal result giving you false confidence, or a raised one causing panic that was never warranted.
We would rather you booked this test understanding it properly. Used the right way, alongside the screening below and a doctor who knows your history, it is genuinely worth doing. Used as a substitute for any of that, it is not.
It Cannot Diagnose Cancer
No blood marker confirms cancer. A diagnosis requires imaging and, in almost every case, a tissue biopsy. What this panel does is tell a doctor whether those next steps are worth taking — which is genuinely useful, just not the same thing.
A Normal Result Does Not Rule Cancer Out
Plenty of cancers never raise these markers, particularly at an early stage when a tumour is small. A clean set of numbers is reassuring, not conclusive — so it should never be a reason to skip a mammogram, delay cervical screening, or ignore a new symptom.
It Does Not Cover Every Cancer
These six markers point mainly at the breast, ovaries, bowel, pancreas and liver. There is no marker here for cervical or uterine cancer, and none for skin, kidney, bladder or lymphoma — for several of those, no reliable blood marker exists at all.
A Raised Marker Is Not Proof
In women the benign explanations are especially common — a cycle, a cyst, endometriosis, fibroids, a pregnancy. The panel's job is to flag, not to conclude. That is precisely why a doctor reads all six together with your history rather than reacting to one number.
What This Test Sits Alongside, Not Instead Of
These remain the screening methods with the strongest evidence behind them for women. A cancer marker panel adds to this picture — it does not replace any part of it.
Used properly, it is worth doing. We will tell you if it is not.
Call our coordinator and describe your situation. If a doctor visit or a different test is the better first step, we will say so — even when that means we do not take a booking.
Why Test With MedCall
A cancer marker result is only as good as the laboratory that produced it and the doctor who reads it. MedCall combines DHA-approved lab processing with an at-home visit and a doctor who reads your numbers against the things that actually move them.
DHA-Approved Laboratories
Every sample is processed at a Dubai Health Authority approved laboratory, on the same analysers a hospital laboratory would use. Regulated testing, not a shortcut.
Your Result Read in Context
This is what most providers skip. We ask about your cycle, any pregnancy, and conditions like endometriosis or fibroids before you test — because CA 125 moves with all of them, and Beta HCG rises in pregnancy. A number without that context is just a number.
Free Doctor Review Included
A doctor reads all six markers together with your history and tells you plainly whether anything needs following up. You are never handed a page of numbers and left to search online at midnight.
A Female Nurse, in Your Own Home
Request a female nurse when you book, and she comes to your home, hotel, or office. No clinic queue, no fasting, no half-day off work — and considerably more privacy than a waiting room.
Results in 48 Hours
Your private digital report is ready in around two days — noticeably faster than many home providers in Dubai. Waiting is the hardest part of any test like this, so we keep that window as short as the laboratory process honestly allows.
No Pressure, No Upselling
If a doctor visit, a mammogram, or a specialist referral is the better first step, our coordinator will say so. We would rather lose a booking than sell a test that does not help you.

What Women Across Dubai Say About Testing at Home
Booking a cancer marker screen is not a casual decision. Here is what women say about how MedCall handled it — the nurse who arrived, the privacy, and the conversation that followed the report.
Female nurses available · DHA-approved labs · 24/7 across DubaiRated 4.9 out of 5 by patients across Dubai for at-home lab testing, sample collection and nursing care.
I asked for a female nurse when I booked and that is exactly who arrived. It made the whole thing far less awkward than a clinic, and she talked me through what was happening before she started. Ten minutes at my kitchen table and it was done.
One of my numbers came back above range and I completely panicked. The doctor called and explained what else can move that marker, what my history meant for it, and exactly what the next step was. That phone call was worth more than the test itself.
The coordinator asked about my cycle and whether I had any known gynae conditions before booking me in. No one had ever asked me that before a blood test. It clearly mattered, because the doctor referred back to it when we went through the report.
I had quotes from two other places and both said four to five days for results. MedCall said 48 hours and it actually was 48 hours. Waiting is the worst part of a test like this, so those extra days genuinely matter.
We both turned fifty this year and decided to get a baseline done together. One nurse, one visit, two separate reports — and each of us got our own call from the doctor afterwards. Far easier than arranging two clinic appointments.
I asked whether I should add a bigger panel on top and was told plainly that it would not add much for my situation, and that my mammogram was the more important thing to keep booked. Being talked out of spending more is not what I expected.

Some markers run faster than others; the 48-hour window reflects the slowest of the six, so you receive one complete report rather than partial results. Same-day sample collection is available across Dubai, 24/7.
No — and any provider who tells you otherwise is overselling. Tumour markers cannot diagnose cancer. A diagnosis requires imaging and, in almost every case, a tissue biopsy.
What the panel gives you is a documented baseline and an early signal. A result outside the expected range tells a doctor further investigation is worthwhile. A normal result is reassuring but does not rule cancer out, because many cancers never raise these markers, particularly at an early stage.
Used alongside your mammogram, cervical screening and a doctor who knows your history, it is genuinely useful. Used as a replacement for those, it is not.
No. Please keep both booked. A mammogram is the reference standard for breast cancer, and no blood marker substitutes for imaging. CA 15.3 is a marker used mainly to monitor a known breast cancer, not to find one.
Cervical screening is even clearer: there is no marker for cervical cancer on this panel at all. Pap and HPV testing do that job, and nothing here replaces them.
This panel sits alongside your regular screening. It does not stand in for any part of it.
No fasting is required for any of the six markers. Eat and drink as normal and book whichever time of day suits you, including evenings and weekends.
There are, however, a few things worth mentioning when you book — your cycle, any pregnancy, and known conditions like endometriosis or fibroids. Your coordinator will ask about these.
You can test at any point, but CA 125 can rise around menstruation — so tell the coordinator where you are in your cycle when you book.
It does not stop you testing. It simply means the doctor reads your CA 125 knowing that context, rather than treating a cycle-related reading as something it is not. In some cases the doctor may suggest repeating that marker at a different point in the month.
Ask about timing before you bookTell us before you book — this one genuinely matters. Beta HCG is the hormone a pregnancy test measures, and AFP also rises during pregnancy. Both will read high, and that is completely normal.
Without that context, a pregnant woman can receive a report showing two raised cancer markers and be frightened by something entirely expected. With it, the doctor reads your report correctly from the start.
A raised marker is far more often benign than not, and in women the ordinary explanations are especially common. CA 125 rises with endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic infection and the menstrual cycle. Smoking raises CEA. Gallstones raise CA 19.9. Pregnancy raises Beta HCG and AFP.
Our doctor reviews all six markers together with your history and calls you. The usual next step is either a repeat test after a few weeks — because a value that settles tells a very different story from one that keeps climbing — or an onward referral for imaging or a specialist.
Ask us about your resultYes — just tell the coordinator when you book and we will arrange a female nurse for your visit.
She comes to your home, hotel, or office anywhere in Dubai, so there is no clinic visit and no waiting room. The collection takes around 10 minutes using a sterile, single-use kit, and that one sample covers all six markers.
A doctor review is part of the price, and no referral is required. Our doctor reads all six markers together with your history, cycle and any known conditions, explains in plain language what each value means, and tells you clearly whether anything needs following up.

Book now — no referral neededMost women consider a first baseline from around 40, or from 35 where there is a family history of breast, ovarian, colorectal or pancreatic cancer. A single reading is informative; the same panel repeated in a year is more so.
If you carry a BRCA variant or have a very strong family pattern, this panel is not enough on its own — you need genetic counselling and a proper surveillance programme with imaging.
And if you have bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, a breast lump or change, blood in your stool, or unexplained weight loss, please see a doctor now rather than waiting on a blood test.
