Understanding the Vaccine

What Is the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is a single combined injection that protects against three viral infections: measles, mumps and rubella. It contains weakened (live) forms of the three viruses, so your immune system learns to recognise and defend against them without causing the illnesses themselves.

3 Infections,
One Injection

A Combined, Well-Established Vaccine

One injection protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Two doses give lasting protection, it is given by a DHA-licensed nurse with the cold chain maintained, and no special preparation is needed.

The MMR vaccine teaches your immune system to recognise measles, mumps and rubella, giving lasting protection from a single, well-established injection.

It works by rehearsal, not infection. The vaccine contains weakened forms of the measles, mumps and rubella viruses, enough for your immune system to learn them and build antibodies, but not enough to cause the diseases in a healthy person. When you next meet the real virus, your body already knows how to respond.

Two doses give the strongest protection. Children receive it on the UAE childhood schedule, usually as two doses, while adults who are not already immune can catch up with one or two doses. Two doses provide long-lasting protection for the great majority of people.

It is one of the most established vaccines in use. The MMR vaccine has been given safely for decades, and the concern that once linked it to autism has been thoroughly disproven by large, careful studies. Because it is a live vaccine, a small number of people should not have it, so a nurse or doctor checks this with you first.

What the MMR Vaccine Protects Against

Measles, mumps and rubella are separate viral infections, and one combined vaccine protects against all three. Here is what each one is, why it is worth protecting against, and the everyday reasons people choose the MMR vaccine.

Measles

Highly contagious

Measles spreads extremely easily and can cause high fever, a widespread rash and, in some people, serious complications such as chest or brain inflammation. It is circulating again in many countries, which is why solid immunity matters.

Mumps

Swollen glands

Mumps causes painful swelling of the glands in the face and neck, along with fever and headache. Most people recover well, but complications can occur, so protection is worthwhile.

Rubella

Matters most in pregnancy

Rubella is usually mild, but serious in pregnancy. If a woman catches it early in pregnancy it can harm the developing baby, so rubella immunity is especially important for women planning a family.

Protecting Others

Community immunity

Being vaccinated helps protect people who cannot be, like newborns too young for the vaccine and those who cannot have a live vaccine for medical reasons. The more people are immune, the harder these viruses spread.

Nursery & School Entry

Enrolment records

Proof of MMR is often needed to enrol a child in a nursery or school in the UAE. Keeping the vaccine up to date, and the record handy, keeps enrolment straightforward.

Travel & Outbreaks

Before you go

Measles still circulates worldwide and outbreaks can happen anywhere. Making sure you and your family are immune before travelling is a simple, sensible precaution.

The MMR vaccine is well established, with two doses giving strong, lasting protection for most people. It is a live vaccine, so a small number of people (for example during pregnancy or with a significantly weakened immune system) should not have it. Our nurse or doctor checks this with you first and, for adults who are unsure, an immunity blood test can confirm whether you are already protected.

How It Works · Simple 4-Step Process · At-Home Vaccination

How the MMR Vaccine Works at Home in Dubai

From first message to an updated vaccination record: four steps, one home visit, no clinic queue. A DHA-licensed nurse brings the vaccine with the cold chain maintained, gives the injection, and updates your records before leaving.

Step 01

Tell Us Who It Is For

Call +971 55 850 2472 or message us. Tell us who the vaccine is for, whether it is a child’s scheduled dose or an adult catch-up, and mention any health conditions or pregnancy, so the nurse or doctor can confirm it is suitable.

Booking confirmed in under 10 minutes

Step 02

Check Immunity First (Optional for Adults)

For adults unsure whether they are already immune, a simple measles, mumps and rubella immunity blood test can confirm it first, which is useful before a catch-up dose or when planning pregnancy. Children on the UAE schedule do not need this; it is entirely optional.

Optional immunity check · evening & weekend slots

Step 03

The Nurse Visit & Your Vaccine

A DHA-licensed nurse arrives at your home, hotel or office with the vaccine kept cold-chain the whole way, gives the injection cleanly and gently, and stays for a short observation afterwards. The whole visit usually takes only a few minutes.

Cold chain maintained · brief observation after

Step 04

Aftercare & Records Updated

We explain what to expect, including that a mild fever or a faint rash can appear a week or two later and usually settles on its own, and when to call. Your vaccination record is updated, and if a second dose is due, we help you schedule it.

Eligibility · Who the MMR Vaccine Is For

Who Should Get It, and Who Shouldn’t

The MMR vaccine is for children on the UAE schedule and for adults who are not already immune. Because it is a live vaccine, a small number of people should not have it or should wait, so here is who it is for, and who should check with us first.

Not sure if you or your child is due, or already immune? A quick check with our nurse or doctor settles it, and for adults, a simple measles, mumps and rubella immunity blood test can show whether you are already protected before you decide.

Two doses in childhood

Children on the UAE Schedule

Children receive the MMR vaccine as two scheduled doses in early childhood, usually the first around twelve months and the second before school. If a dose was missed, a catch-up is simple to arrange.

Catch-up dose

Adults Who Are Not Immune

Adults who never had the vaccine, or are not sure, can catch up with one or two doses. This is common for people who missed childhood doses or grew up where MMR was not routine.

Plan ahead

Before Pregnancy

Rubella can harm a baby if caught in early pregnancy, so immunity is best confirmed before conceiving. The vaccine is given before pregnancy, not during it, and we advise a short gap before trying.

Before you go

Travellers

Measles still circulates in many countries and outbreaks can happen anywhere. Making sure you are immune before you travel is a simple, sensible precaution for you and your family.

Often required

Healthcare & Hospitality Staff

Many healthcare, education and hospitality roles ask for proof of MMR immunity. A vaccination record, or an immunity blood test, covers this cleanly.

Enrolment

Nursery & School Entry

Nurseries and schools in the UAE often ask for an up to date MMR record before a child starts. Keeping the vaccine and record current keeps enrolment straightforward.

Not Sure If the MMR Vaccine Is Right for You?

Tell our coordinator who it is for and any health conditions. If the vaccine is suitable, we arrange the home visit, and if an adult is unsure about being immune, we can check that first with a simple blood test.

The Home Visit

A DHA Nurse Comes to You

No clinic, no waiting room, no rushing a child through a busy reception. A DHA-licensed nurse arrives at your home, hotel or office at a time that suits you, gives the MMR vaccine with the cold chain maintained, and updates your records before leaving, all in a few calm minutes.

The whole visit is quick, calm and gentle, and your vaccination record is updated before we leave.

A DHA-licensed nurse brings the vaccine kept cold-chain the whole way along with everything else needed for a clean, safe injection. Most visits take only a few minutes from knock to done, and you never have to leave home, which is easier for young children and busy parents alike.

The cold chain is what keeps a vaccine effective. Our nurse carries the MMR vaccine in temperature-controlled conditions from the pharmacy to your door, so it works just as well at home as it would in a clinic. We check and record this as part of the visit.

Comfort matters, especially for children. The nurse is gentle and unhurried, gives the injection cleanly, stays for a short observation afterwards, and explains what to expect over the next day or two. Your record is updated on the spot.

Is It Safe? · The Evidence

Is the MMR Vaccine Safe?

It is one of the most studied vaccines in the world, given safely for decades. Here is a straight, evidence-based answer to the questions parents and adults ask most.

The Autism Link Has Been Disproven

The idea that MMR causes autism came from a single small study that was later retracted and discredited. Since then, very large studies following millions of children have found no link between the MMR vaccine and autism. It is one of the most thoroughly investigated questions in medicine.

Decades of Safe, Routine Use

The MMR vaccine has been given to hundreds of millions of people worldwide since the 1970s. Its safety record is long and well documented, which is why it remains part of routine childhood schedules in the UAE and around the world.

Common Side-Effects Are Mild

Most people have no trouble at all. When side-effects do happen they are usually mild: a sore arm, a low fever, or a faint rash about a week or two later, which settle on their own. We explain what to look for before we leave.

Serious Reactions Are Rare

As with any medicine, a serious allergic reaction is possible but very rare. Our nurse is trained to manage one and stays for a short observation after the injection, so help is immediate in the unlikely event it is needed.

It Does Not Give You the Diseases

The vaccine uses weakened viruses, not enough to cause measles, mumps or rubella in a healthy person. A mild, short-lived reaction can occur as the immune system responds, but this is not the same as catching the illness.

Honest About Who Should Wait

Being safe for most people does not mean it suits everyone on any given day. We check suitability first and, for pregnancy or a weakened immune system, advise the safe timing rather than vaccinating regardless.

Our Promise: A Straight, Evidence-Based Answer

We will never oversell a vaccine or brush off a fair question. The MMR vaccine is very safe and well studied, common side-effects are mild, and serious reactions are rare. If it is not the right choice for you on the day, we will say so and advise the safe option, rather than vaccinating regardless.

Choosing Your Path · An Honest Comparison

Vaccinate Now, or Check Immunity First?

Most people can simply book the vaccine. But if you are an adult who is unsure whether you are already immune, or you are planning a pregnancy, a quick immunity check first can save an unnecessary dose. Here is how the options compare.

We are glad to do either, so we have no reason to push one over the other. For a child on the UAE schedule, just book the vaccine. For an adult who is unsure, an immunity check first is often the sensible step, and for most people the MMR vaccine is the direct answer.

Adding chickenpox cover

  • MMR is the standard vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella.
  • MMRV also covers chickenpox in one injection, for eligible children.

  • MMRV is age-restricted and not right for everyone.
  • Availability of MMRV can vary; we confirm before booking.

Which Path Actually Suits You

Four situations and the honest answer for each, so you book what fits your circumstances, not the longest route on the list.

Your child is on the UAE schedule Just book the MMR vaccine, no test needed.
You are an adult unsure if you are immune An immunity check first can save an unnecessary dose.
You are planning a pregnancy Confirm rubella immunity before conceiving.
You want chickenpox cover too Ask about MMRV for eligible children.

Not sure which path is right? Ask us.

Thirty seconds on the phone is enough to decide. For most children the MMR vaccine is the direct answer, and for adults who are unsure, we suggest an immunity check only when it genuinely helps.

This schedule is indicative and reflects the routine UAE childhood programme. The exact vaccines and ages are set by the DHA and MOHAP and can change over time, so we confirm the current schedule with you before any visit.

Doses & Immunity

The MMR Schedule and When Immunity Builds

The MMR vaccine is given as two doses, and protection builds over the weeks that follow. Here is the schedule for children and adults, and how immunity can be confirmed if there is ever any doubt.

Two
Doses

Your Record, Updated

Each dose is recorded and shared with you, ready for school, work or travel, with a doctor available for any questions.

The schedule is simple: two doses for lasting protection, given by a nurse at home.

For children, the two doses are given in early childhood on the UAE schedule. For adults who are not immune, the same two doses can be given as a catch-up, spaced about a month apart. We confirm the right timing for you before booking.

1 First DoseAround twelve months of age on the UAE childhood schedule, or the first catch-up dose for an adult who is not immune.
2 Second DoseBefore school, usually around four to six years, or about one month after the first dose for an adult catch-up.
IgG Confirming ImmunityAn IgG blood test can confirm immunity if there is any doubt, which is useful for adults unsure of their history or planning pregnancy.

Protection is not instant. Immunity builds over the weeks after each dose, and two doses give strong, lasting protection for the great majority of people. If timing or immunity is ever unclear, a doctor advises you.

Two doses give the strongest protection. One dose already offers good protection, and the second builds on it. If a dose was missed it is not too late to catch up, and your record is updated each time.

MMR Vaccine at Home in Dubai: Frequently Asked Questions

Some of these come from parents deciding whether to book. Just as many come from adults working out whether they need a catch-up dose, or whether they are already immune. All are answered here, honestly and without sales spin.

Yes, the MMR vaccine is very safe and one of the most studied vaccines in the world, given to hundreds of millions of people over several decades. Most people have no trouble at all, and when side effects happen they are usually mild, such as a sore arm, a low fever or a faint rash. Serious reactions are rare, and our nurse stays for a short observation after the injection.

When they do occur they are usually mild and short lived, such as a sore arm, a low fever, or a faint rash that can appear about a week or two later and settles on its own. Children on the UAE schedule, adults who are not already immune, women planning a pregnancy who need rubella protection, travellers, and many healthcare, education and hospitality workers. Because it is a live vaccine, a small number of people should not have it, so our nurse or doctor checks suitability first.

Check if MMR is right for you

Yes. Adults who never had the vaccine, or are not sure, can catch up with one or two doses. This is common for people who missed childhood doses or grew up where MMR was not routine. If you are unsure whether you are already immune, a simple blood test can confirm it first.

Book an adult MMR dose

If you had two documented doses as a child, you are very likely already protected and do not need more. If you only had one dose, or your records are unclear, a catch-up dose or an immunity blood test can settle it. Tell us your history and we will advise honestly.

Ask about your MMR history

A simple IgG blood test can check whether you are already immune, which is useful for adults unsure of their history or planning a pregnancy. Rubella immunity testing starts at AED 199, and measles and mumps IgG can be added. If you are not immune, we can arrange the vaccine after.

Book an immunity check

No, the MMR vaccine is not given during pregnancy because it is a live vaccine. If you are planning a pregnancy, it is best to confirm rubella immunity and have any vaccine you need beforehand, and to avoid conceiving for about one month after a dose. Our nurse or doctor will advise the safe timing.
