What Is a Culture & Sensitivity Test?
A culture test takes a sample — urine, blood, a swab or stool — and gives any bacteria or fungi in it the conditions to grow. If something is there, it multiplies into visible colonies the laboratory can identify. The “sensitivity” half then tests that exact organism against a range of antibiotics to see which ones will actually work.
Antibiotic
Two Answers, One Sample
Not just “is there an infection” but which organism is causing it and which antibiotic will clear it — the two things that turn guesswork into targeted treatment.
A culture test answers the two questions a quick test cannot: what exactly is causing this infection, and which antibiotic will actually treat it?
It works in two stages. First the culture: your sample is placed on a nutrient medium that encourages any bacteria or fungi to grow into colonies the lab can see, count and identify by name. Then the sensitivity stage — that identified organism is exposed to a panel of antibiotics to find which ones stop it and which it shrugs off. The result is not just a diagnosis but a treatment map: the bug, and the drug that beats it.
This is also why a culture takes time, and that time is the test doing its job. Bacteria have to physically multiply before anything can be identified, and you cannot rush growth. For most samples that is around two days; blood cultures are held roughly five days because the organisms in a bloodstream infection can be slow and few. A test that promised a same-day culture result would not be culturing anything — and would tell you far less.
That trade-off is deliberate. A urine dipstick or rapid test can flag within minutes that something is probably wrong, which is genuinely useful for a fast decision. Only a culture names the organism and the antibiotic, which is why it remains the gold standard for confirming an infection and guiding treatment that actually works rather than a broad-spectrum guess.
What a Culture Test Is Used For
Every culture does the same job — grow whatever is there, name it, and find the antibiotic that treats it. What changes is where the sample comes from. These are the ones we collect most often at home in Dubai.
Urine Culture
The most common reason
For urinary tract infections — burning, frequent or painful urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or a UTI that keeps coming back. It confirms the infection and names the antibiotic that will clear it, which is why doctors order it before or after empirical treatment.
Wound & Skin Swab
Cuts, abscesses, post-op
A cut, boil, abscess or surgical wound that is red, hot, weeping or not healing. A swab of the site or its pus identifies what has colonised it and which antibiotic suits — useful when a first course has not worked.
Throat Swab
Bacterial vs viral
A severe or lingering sore throat where a bacterial cause is suspected. A throat culture helps separate a bacterial infection that antibiotics can treat from a viral one that they cannot — which spares needless prescriptions.
Stool Culture
Gut & travel infections
Persistent diarrhoea, suspected food poisoning, or a stomach upset that will not settle — especially after travel. A stool culture identifies the organism behind it so treatment, if needed, targets the right one instead of guessing.
Blood Culture
Serious / systemic infection
Used when an infection may have reached the bloodstream. This is the serious end of testing — and if you are severely unwell, feverish and deteriorating, that is an emergency, not something to wait five days for. See the red-flag guidance further down.
Genital & Other Swabs
Discreet, at home
High vaginal, urethral, ear, eye, nasal and other site swabs for suspected local infections — collected privately at home. The same principle applies: identify the organism, then name the treatment, with results handled confidentially.
A positive culture is a finding, not automatically a diagnosis. Growing an organism confirms it is present — but whether it needs treating depends on your symptoms. Bacteria can live in urine or on skin without causing an infection that requires antibiotics, and treating those can do more harm than good. That is why every MedCall culture is read by a doctor alongside what you are actually experiencing, rather than sent to you as a bare lab sheet.
How Your Culture Test Works at Home in Dubai
From first message to a doctor-reviewed result — four steps, one home visit, no clinic queue. The right sample, collected properly, then given the time it needs to give you a real answer.
Step 01
Tell Us What Is Going On
Call +971 55 850 2472 or message us and describe your symptoms. This decides the right sample: urine for urinary symptoms, a swab for a wound or throat, stool for a gut problem, blood for a suspected systemic infection. Collecting the right sample is what makes the result worth having.
Booking confirmed in under 10 minutesStep 02
Collected the Right Way — and Before Antibiotics
A clean sample is everything for a culture. Our nurse guides a midstream, clean-catch urine sample or uses a sterile single-use swab so ordinary skin bacteria do not contaminate the result. Two things genuinely matter: antibiotics taken before the test can suppress growth and hide a real infection, so ideally the sample is collected before you start them. Never stop a prescribed antibiotic on your own — just tell us, and the doctor will advise the right timing.
Sterile technique · evening & weekend slotsStep 03
Grown & Tested at a DHA-Approved Lab
Your sample goes to a DHA-approved microbiology laboratory, where any organism is grown into colonies, identified, and tested against a panel of antibiotics. This is the part that takes time, and it cannot be rushed — the bacteria have to multiply first. For most samples that is around 48 hours; blood cultures are held roughly five days to catch slower, sparser organisms.
~48 hours · blood cultures ~5 daysStep 04
Result, Antibiotic Guidance & Doctor Review
Your digital report names the organism found — if any — and which antibiotics it is sensitive or resistant to. Rather than leaving you to decode a lab sheet, our doctor explains what it means alongside your symptoms, including whether it needs treating at all, and what the sensitivity result points towards.
Digital report · free doctor reviewGet the sample collected today. Book your culture now.
Our coordinator arranges everything — the right sample, the nurse, the timing — most patients are booked and confirmed in under 10 minutes. No clinic visit, and the sample reaches the lab the same day so the clock starts straight away.
Is Something Actually Infected?
A culture answers the question a doctor asks before reaching for antibiotics: is there really an infection here, what is causing it, and what will treat it? These are the symptoms where that answer changes what happens next.
A culture is most useful when something is not settling — or keeps coming back. A one-off symptom that clears on its own rarely needs one. A symptom that lingers, worsens, or returns after a course of antibiotics is exactly where naming the organism earns its place.
Burning or Frequent Urination
Stinging when you pass urine, going far more often, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or lower-tummy discomfort. A urine culture confirms a UTI and names the antibiotic that will clear it — particularly worth it if a UTI keeps returning.
A Wound That Will Not Heal
A cut, boil, abscess or surgical site that is red, hot, swelling, or weeping and not settling. A swab of the site identifies what has taken hold and which antibiotic suits — especially useful when a first course has not worked.
A Severe or Lingering Sore Throat
A painful throat with fever, white patches or swollen glands that is not improving. A throat culture helps tell a bacterial infection antibiotics can treat from a viral one they cannot — which avoids taking them for nothing.
Diarrhoea That Will Not Settle
Loose stools lasting more than a few days, blood or mucus, or a stomach upset after travel or a suspect meal. A stool culture identifies the organism behind it so that treatment, if it is needed, targets the right one.
An Infection That Came Back
You finished a course of antibiotics and the symptoms returned, or never fully cleared. This is where a culture is most valuable — it shows whether the organism was resistant to the first drug and which one to use instead.
Unusual Discharge or Irritation
Genital, ear, or eye discharge, irritation or discomfort that is not clearing. A swab of the site is collected discreetly at home, cultured to identify the cause, and reported confidentially with treatment guidance.
A culture is the right tool for an infection that is bothering you, not for one that is overwhelming you. If you have a high fever with confusion or drowsiness, breathing that feels fast or difficult, a rash that does not fade under pressure, severe shivering, very little urine, or you simply feel dramatically worse by the hour — that is an emergency, and it is exactly the situation a hospital blood culture is done for, alongside immediate treatment. Call 998 for an ambulance or go straight to the nearest emergency department. They will take the cultures there and start treatment at once. A home visit and a result in two to five days is the wrong response, and if you call us in that state we will tell you exactly this.
Not Sure Whether a Culture Is the Right Step?
Tell our coordinator what has been happening and for how long. If a culture is the sensible next step we will arrange it and the right sample — and if what you are describing needs a doctor today rather than a test that takes days, we will say that instead.
A DHA-Licensed Nurse Comes to You
No clinic visit, no waiting room, no sitting in traffic while you feel unwell. The entire collection comes to your home, hotel or office — done properly, discreetly, and moving to the lab the same day.
Everything comes to you. A trained nurse, the right sample, and a sterile kit — at a time and place that suits you.
Your nurse arrives at your chosen time anywhere in Dubai and first confirms the right sample for your symptoms. Then they collect it the way it should be done: a guided clean-catch urine, a sterile single-use swab, or a blood draw as needed. Getting this step right is what makes the culture reliable — a rushed or contaminated sample is a wasted test, so it is never rushed.
Being at home matters for comfort and privacy, especially for sensitive swabs. Everything is handled discreetly, your sample is sealed and labelled in front of you, and your report later comes to your phone rather than a clinic reception desk.
You cannot rush how fast bacteria grow — but you can start the clock sooner. Your sealed sample goes to a DHA-approved laboratory the same day, so the roughly 48-hour culture window begins straight away, rather than after a clinic backlog. Blood cultures still take around five days.
A Nurse at Your Door
Most visits are booked and confirmed in under ten minutes by call or WhatsApp — and a nurse can be with you the same day, anywhere in Dubai.
The Case for Testing Before Treating
Antibiotics work best when they are aimed at the right target. A culture is how you aim — it turns “probably an infection, try this and see” into “this organism, this drug”. Here is what that changes.
The Right Antibiotic, First Time
The sensitivity panel shows which drugs will actually work against your specific organism. That replaces trial and error with a targeted choice — fewer courses that do nothing, and a quicker route to feeling better.
When the First Course Did Not Work
Symptoms that returned or never cleared often mean the organism was resistant to the drug you were given. A culture shows exactly that, and points to the one that will — instead of another blind attempt.
Avoiding Antibiotics You Do Not Need
If nothing grows, or what grows is not causing your symptoms, the right answer may be no antibiotic at all. A culture protects you from a course you never needed — and from its side effects.
Helping Slow Resistance
Broad-spectrum antibiotics used on a guess are how resistance spreads. Choosing a narrow, targeted drug because a culture confirmed it works is better for you now and keeps these medicines effective for later.
Getting on Top of Recurrent Infections
A UTI or infection that keeps returning is worth culturing properly. It shows whether the same organism keeps coming back and what reliably clears it — turning a repeating problem into one you can actually plan around.
Checking an Infection Has Gone
For some infections it matters to confirm the organism has actually cleared, not just that symptoms eased. A repeat culture provides that confirmation — useful before stopping treatment or being signed off by a specialist.
A Site Culture, a Blood Culture or an Infection Marker?
Three ways to get to the bottom of a suspected infection. A culture and sensitivity from the affected site, a blood culture, and a same-day infection marker each answer a different question — and the right one depends on where the infection is and how unwell you feel.
We offer all three, so we have no reason to steer you. The right choice depends on what you need — pinpointing the organism and its antibiotic at the affected site, checking the bloodstream, or gauging how active the infection is — and for most localised infections, a culture and sensitivity from the site is the sensible first step.
Culture & Sensitivity
The organism and its antibiotic
- Grows the exact organism from the affected site.
- Shows which antibiotic works — treatment on evidence, not guesswork.
- Any site — urine, wound, throat, sputum, ear, genital and more.
- Results in about 48 hours, read by a doctor.
- Under AED 299, a AED 49 collection applies.
Blood Culture & Sensitivity
When the bloodstream may be involved
- For a suspected bloodstream infection when you are unwell.
- Also identifies the organism and its antibiotic.
- Over AED 299, so home collection is free.
- Takes around 5 days — held longer to be sure.
- A different test for a different question — not a site swab.
Add a CBC
Shows how active the infection is
- A same-day blood count alongside the culture.
- Raised white cells help show an infection is active.
- Useful while the culture is growing over 48 hours.
- Does not identify the organism — the culture does that.
- On its own under AED 299, a AED 49 collection applies.
Which One Actually Suits You
Four situations and the honest answer for each — so you book the test that fits your infection, not the biggest one on the list.
Not sure which you need? Tell us where the infection is.
Thirty seconds on the phone is enough to get this right. For most localised infections the AED 189 culture and sensitivity is the right test — and we suggest a blood culture or a same-day CBC only when your situation calls for it.
Why Test With MedCall
A culture is a regulated laboratory test — the analyser does not care who booked it. What differs between providers is whether the sample is collected properly in the first place, how honestly the turnaround is explained, and whether anyone reads the result with you afterwards.
DHA-Approved Microbiology Labs
Every sample is processed at a Dubai Health Authority approved laboratory, on the same analysers a hospital microbiology department would use. Regulated culturing, not a shortcut.
The Right Sample, Collected Properly
This is what actually decides whether a culture is any good. Our nurse guides a clean-catch urine or uses a sterile swab so ordinary bacteria do not contaminate the result — and we ask about antibiotics, because a sample taken after they start can hide a real infection. A rushed, contaminated sample is a wasted test.
The Report, Actually Explained
A sensitivity grid of abbreviations is useless if nobody translates it. Our doctor reads the organism and the susceptible / resistant list with you — what it means for your symptoms, which antibiotic it points to, and whether it needs treating at all.
Honest About the Wait
A culture takes time because the bacteria have to grow, and we tell you that up front — around 48 hours, about five days for blood. Nobody here will promise a same-day culture result, because there is no such thing. The wait is the test doing its job.
Easy to Repeat or Confirm
Whether it is a test of cure or a recurring infection, a repeat is simple. Book it when you call and a nurse comes back to you — no clinic trip, and a clear before-and-after on whether the organism has actually cleared.
No Pressure, No Needless Antibiotics
If a dipstick first makes more sense, we will say so. If your result does not warrant an antibiotic, we will not manufacture one. And if what you describe needs a doctor today rather than a culture, we will tell you that too.
Culture Testing Prices

What Your Sensitivity Report Shows
A sensitivity report can look like a wall of abbreviations, but it is really telling you three simple things: what the organism is, which antibiotics were tested against it, and which of those will actually work. Here is how to read it at a glance.
The Clear Ring Tells the Story
Where a clear ring forms around an antibiotic disc, that drug is stopping your organism from growing. No ring means no effect — and that becomes the grade on your report.
The report is not a verdict — it is a map. The organism, the antibiotics tested against it, and a simple grade for each.
Behind the report is a real, physical test. Tiny discs, each holding a different antibiotic, are placed on the plate where your organism is growing. Where an antibiotic works, a clear ring appears around its disc — the organism cannot grow near it. Where it does not work, the organism grows right up to the edge. The clearer that ring, the more effective the drug.
That result is translated onto your report as a grade for every antibiotic tested. You will see the organism named at the top, then a list of antibiotics, each marked with a single letter that tells you, at a glance, whether it is worth using.
Your doctor does the last step for you. They read the susceptible options against your history — any allergies, antibiotics you have already tried, and where the infection is — and choose the targeted drug from the list. That is the difference between a guess and a prescription aimed at exactly the right target.
What Dubai Says About Knowing Exactly What to Treat
People book a culture when an infection is not clearing, or before starting an antibiotic. What patients tell us they value is being booked the right sample, being told to test before treating, and having a doctor read the report rather than emailing a lab sheet.
DHA-licensed nurses · DHA-approved labs · 24/7 across DubaiRated 4.9 out of 5 by patients across Dubai for at-home lab testing, sample collection and nursing care.
Two rounds of antibiotics and the same infection kept coming back. The culture showed which one would actually work instead of guessing again. The nurse took the sample at home and the report came back in two days with the doctor talking me through it. I wish I had done this the first time.
I called asking for a urine culture. The coordinator asked about my symptoms and said a different swab was actually the one my doctor would want — then checked before the nurse arrived so nothing was wasted. No one had ever asked me what I was testing for before taking the booking.
I mentioned I was about to start the antibiotics I had at home. They told me to give the sample first, because starting the course would have made the culture unreliable — and explained why in plain terms. I never stopped anything on my own; the nurse just came the same day so I did not lose time. Honest advice I did not expect.
The report was a page of organisms and letters I could not make sense of. The doctor explained which antibiotics the report said would work and which would not, and what to take back to my own physician. A lab sheet on its own would have meant nothing to me.
After treatment my doctor wanted a repeat culture to check the infection had actually cleared, and I was in no state to sit in a clinic. The nurse came to me both times, used the same careful collection, and the second report gave my doctor what she needed. For anyone recovering, this is the way to do it.
I described my symptoms expecting to book a swab. Instead I was told that what I was describing needed a doctor to examine me that day, not a culture sitting in a lab for two days. They talked me out of giving them money. That is exactly why I have called them twice since.

Culture & Sensitivity Test in Dubai — Frequently Asked Questions
Some of these come from people deciding whether to book. Just as many come from people holding a report full of organism names and letters, trying to work out what it says. Both are answered here, honestly.
Can’t find your question? Call us free on +971 55 850 2472It does two jobs. The culture identifies which bacteria are growing in your sample — urine, a wound swab, sputum, and so on. The sensitivity then tests those bacteria against a panel of antibiotics to see which ones actually kill them and which they resist.
That is the point of it: instead of guessing which antibiotic might work, the report tells you which one will. It is the difference between treating blind and treating the exact organism you have.
Book a culture at homeA standard culture & sensitivity — urine, wound, throat, sputum, stool or a swab — is AED 189. Because that is under AED 299, home collection is charged at AED 49, so a single culture is AED 238 all-in: the nurse visit, DHA-approved laboratory culturing, the report, and a free doctor review.
A blood culture is AED 299, which meets the free-collection threshold, so it is AED 299 all-in. Booking two cultures together also clears AED 299, so the collection charge drops away.
Get a price confirmation nowA culture is not a same-day test, and cannot honestly be sold as one. Most cultures take around 48 hours, because the bacteria have to be grown in the lab before they can be identified and tested against antibiotics. A blood culture takes about 5 days.
What is same day is the collection: a nurse comes to you within hours. The report is sent by WhatsApp or email once the culture is complete, followed by a doctor review. If you need an answer in hours rather than days, tell us — a different test may suit better.
No fasting. Preparation depends on the sample. For a urine culture, a clean mid-stream sample gives the most reliable result, and a first-morning sample is often best — the nurse will guide you through it on arrival.
The one thing that genuinely matters is timing relative to antibiotics, which is important enough to have its own answer below. Tell us what you are testing and whether you have started any medication when you book.
This is the single most important thing to get right. A culture is most reliable when the sample is taken before the first dose of antibiotics, because the drug suppresses the very bacteria the lab is trying to grow — which can turn a real infection into a falsely negative result.
But never stop a prescribed course on your own to "clean up" a result. If you have already started, keep taking it as directed, tell us when you book, and the doctor will read the report knowing that. If you have not started yet, that is the ideal moment to test — call us first.
Test before you startThe right culture is defined by where the problem is. We collect urine, wound and pus, throat, nasal, ear, eye, sputum, stool, genital and other swabs, plus blood cultures — all from home.
If you already have a doctor’s request, tell us exactly what it names and we book that. If you are not sure, describe your symptoms when you call and we will point you to the sample your doctor is most likely to want — rather than letting you pay for the wrong one.
Not sure which one? Ask usOnce the lab knows which organism is growing, it exposes it to a range of antibiotics and records how each performs. Your report then lists antibiotics as “S” for sensitive (the drug works), “R” for resistant (it does not), and sometimes “I” for intermediate.
That list is the whole value of the test. It tells your doctor which antibiotic to prescribe with confidence and, just as usefully, which ones would have been a wasted course. Our doctor will translate the letters into plain language for you.
They answer different questions. A marker like CRP tells you whether there is inflammation and roughly how much, same day — but not what is causing it. It is a fast yes-or-no on whether something is going on.
A culture identifies the actual organism and which antibiotic beats it, but takes around 48 hours because it has to grow the bacteria first. They are often used together: a marker to gauge how active things are now, a culture to name the culprit and guide treatment. Tell us your situation and we will book what fits.
Yes, and for some infections it is genuinely worth doing. A repeat culture after you finish the antibiotics can confirm the infection has actually cleared rather than gone quiet — particularly useful for recurring urinary infections and slow-healing wounds.
It is usually taken a set number of days after the course ends, so the timing matters; the doctor will advise when. As with the first sample, the nurse comes back to you — there is no need to travel while you are still recovering.
A negative culture does not always mean there is no infection. The most common reason is that antibiotics were already on board when the sample was taken, suppressing growth — which is exactly why timing matters. Some organisms are also slow or difficult to grow, and some illnesses are viral, where a bacterial culture will correctly find nothing.
If you have real symptoms and a negative result, that is a reason to see a doctor, not to ignore it. Our doctor will look at the result alongside your symptoms and tell you honestly whether a repeat, a different sample, or a clinic visit is the sensible next step.
Yes, and it is a fair thing to ask, because a poorly collected culture is a contaminated one. Our DHA-licensed nurses use sterile technique, sealed containers and the correct transport medium for each sample type, and samples are moved to a DHA-approved lab under proper conditions.
For samples you help produce, such as urine, the nurse guides you through clean collection so the result reflects your infection and not skin or surface bacteria. Done properly, a home-collected culture is as reliable as one taken in a clinic.
A doctor review is part of the price and no referral is required. A culture report is a dense page of organisms and sensitivity letters — the doctor reads it against your symptoms and any medication, then explains in plain terms which antibiotic the report supports and what to take back to your own physician.
To book, call or WhatsApp +971 55 850 2472 with your name, address and a preferred time — and tell us why you are testing and whether you have started antibiotics, so we book the right sample at the right moment. Same-day collection slots are available across Dubai.
