What Is a Cancer Marker Test?
Cancer markers — also called tumour markers — are proteins that circulate in your blood and can rise when certain cancers are present. They can also rise for entirely harmless reasons. A cancer marker screen measures five of them from one sample, so you have a documented baseline and a clear answer on whether anything is worth a closer look.
Markers
One Blood Sample, Five Markers
A single serum sample measures CEA, CA 19.9, PSA Total, PSA Free and AFP — the five markers most relevant to men — in one appointment, with no fasting needed.
A cancer marker test measures specific proteins in your blood — substances that certain cancers can release, and that a number of non-cancerous conditions release too.
This is a screening aid, not a diagnosis — and that distinction matters. A raised marker does not mean you have cancer, and a normal marker does not rule it out. What these five values do give you is a documented baseline and an early prompt: a result outside the expected range is a signal to investigate further with imaging, a specialist, or a repeat test. That is exactly how a doctor uses them, and it is how we present them to you.
The MedCall panel covers the five markers most relevant to men. CEA is associated with colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers. CA 19.9 relates to the pancreas and biliary tract. PSA Total and PSA Free together assess prostate health — and read as a ratio, they help separate benign prostate enlargement from something needing attention. AFP is linked to the liver and to testicular germ cell tumours.
Testing is most useful if you are over 45, have a family history of cancer, are already tracking a known condition, or simply want a baseline on record before anything changes. A single set of numbers is informative; the same numbers repeated in a year are far more informative, because a trend tells a doctor more than any one reading. Every MedCall report includes a free doctor review to put your results in that context.
What the Cancer Marker Screen Measures
Each marker points to a different part of the body. Below is what every one of them actually measures, and just as importantly, what else can move it. All five are processed at DHA-approved laboratories and reviewed by a doctor.
CEA
Carcinoembryonic Antigen
Most associated with colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers, and used widely to monitor them. Also raised by smoking, inflammatory bowel conditions and liver disease.
CA 19.9
Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9
Linked to the pancreas and biliary tract. It also rises with pancreatitis, gallstones and jaundice, and a small share of people never produce it at all — context is everything.
PSA Total
Prostate-Specific Antigen
The most widely used prostate marker in men. Raised in prostate cancer, but equally in benign enlargement, prostatitis, and even after cycling or recent ejaculation.
PSA Free
Unbound Prostate-Specific Antigen
Measures the portion of PSA circulating unattached to proteins. On its own it says little — its real value appears when it is compared against your total PSA.
Free : Total Ratio
Calculated From Both PSA Values
This is why both PSA values are measured. When total PSA sits in a borderline range, the ratio helps distinguish benign prostate enlargement from a result that warrants urology review.
AFP
Alpha-Fetoprotein
Associated with primary liver cancer and with testicular germ cell tumours. Also elevated in hepatitis and cirrhosis, which is why liver history is part of the interpretation.
Why every card mentions a benign cause. Cancer markers are not exclusive to cancer, and reading one in isolation is how people end up frightened by a number that meant nothing. Your MedCall report is reviewed by a doctor who reads all five together, alongside your history and symptoms, and tells you plainly whether a result needs following up or not.

Our coordinator arranges everything — panel, timing, professional, results — most patients are booked and confirmed in under 10 minutes. No clinic visit, no fasting, no waiting room.
How to Prepare for Your Cancer Marker Test
There is no fasting and no complicated preparation for this panel. But a handful of everyday things can temporarily push PSA up and produce a raised reading that has nothing to do with cancer. Six minutes of reading here can save you weeks of unnecessary worry.
Why this section exists. A falsely raised PSA is one of the most common reasons men end up in an anxious cycle of repeat tests and referrals. Most providers never mention it. We would rather you got a clean result the first time.
Eat and Drink Normally
No fasting is required for any of the five markers. Have your usual breakfast, coffee and water, and book whatever time of day suits you.
Avoid Ejaculation
Sexual activity can temporarily raise PSA for a day or two. Leaving a 48-hour gap before your sample removes one of the most common causes of a falsely high reading.
Skip Cycling and Long Rides
Sustained saddle pressure on the prostate can lift PSA. Give cycling, spin classes, motorbikes and horse riding a rest for two days before your appointment.
Book Before Prostate Procedures
A rectal examination, catheter, cystoscopy or prostate biopsy can all raise PSA. If you have had any of these recently, tell us and we will advise how long to wait.
Wait Out a Urine Infection
A urinary infection or prostate inflammation can push PSA up sharply. If you have burning, urgency or fever, get that treated first — then test, so the number means something.
Mention Your Medications
Some prostate and hair-loss medications lower PSA, and high-dose biotin supplements can interfere with certain lab assays. A quick mention when booking keeps your result readable.
Not Sure If Something Applies to You? Ask First.
Our coordinator will run through the short checklist with you before your visit — medications, recent procedures, symptoms — so your sample is taken at the right time and your result is one you can actually trust. It takes two minutes and costs nothing.
A DHA Nurse Comes to You
No clinic, no waiting room, no awkward front desk. A licensed nurse arrives at your home, hotel or office at a time that suits you, takes a small blood sample in minutes, and it is on its way to the lab the same day — all completely private.
The whole visit is quick, discreet and painless — and your results are read by a doctor, not just emailed to you.
A DHA-licensed nurse brings everything needed and draws a small blood sample from your arm with a sterile, single-use kit. Most visits take around ten minutes from knock to done, and you never have to leave home. Cancer marker tests need no fasting, so you can eat and drink normally beforehand.
The timing is straightforward. The sample reaches a DHA-approved laboratory the same day, and many markers — such as CEA, AFP and CA 19-9 — are reported the same day too. Some, such as PSA, are typically back the next day, and we tell you the timing for whichever markers you have upfront.
The one thing we never rush is what the result means. Your result is confidential and read by a doctor — and this matters more with tumour markers than almost anything, because a raised marker is not a diagnosis and a normal one is not an all-clear. You are told clearly what it means in your context and what, if anything, comes next. Never a bare figure on a screen to worry over alone.
- DHA-licensed nursesTrained, insured, and discreet with home blood draws
- Results without the waitMany markers reported the same day; PSA typically next day, from a DHA-approved lab
- Read in context by a doctorA marker is never read as a diagnosis on its own — anywhere across Dubai

Who Should Consider a Cancer Marker Screen
This panel is not for everyone, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a test you do not need. It is most useful for men in the situations below — where a baseline, or a value tracked over time, genuinely adds something.
Men Over 45 Wanting a Baseline
Prostate risk climbs steadily from the mid-forties. A first set of values now becomes the reference point every future test is measured against — and a trend is worth far more than a single reading.
A Family History of Cancer
If prostate, colorectal, liver or pancreatic cancer runs in your family, most doctors suggest starting the conversation earlier — around forty rather than forty-five.
Ongoing Urinary Changes
A weakening stream, waking at night to urinate, or difficulty starting. These usually turn out to be benign enlargement — but they should be assessed by a doctor, with PSA as one part of that picture, not the whole of it.
Smokers and Ex-Smokers
Smoking raises CEA on its own, so knowing your personal starting point matters here more than most. It is the difference between a number that alarms you and a number your doctor can interpret properly.
Known Liver Conditions
Hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease or cirrhosis all change how AFP should be read. If you are living with any of these, tell us when booking so the doctor interprets your result in the right context.
Tracking a Previous Result
If a marker came back borderline before, repeating the same panel is how you find out whether it settled or is trending upward. Direction of travel is the most useful thing these numbers can tell you.
What This Test Does Not Do
Most providers only tell you what a test can do. Knowing where a cancer marker panel stops being useful matters just as much — because that is what stops a normal result giving you false confidence, or a raised one causing panic that was never warranted.
We would rather you booked this test understanding it properly. Used the right way, alongside the screening below and a doctor who knows your history, it is genuinely worth doing. Used as a substitute for all of that, it is not.
It Cannot Diagnose Cancer
No blood marker confirms cancer. A diagnosis requires imaging and, in almost every case, a tissue biopsy. What this panel does is tell a doctor whether those next steps are worth taking — which is a genuinely useful thing, just not the same thing.
A Normal Result Does Not Rule Cancer Out
Plenty of cancers never raise these markers, particularly at an early stage when the tumour is small. A clean set of numbers is reassuring, not conclusive — so it should never be a reason to ignore a new symptom or skip a scheduled screening.
It Does Not Cover Every Cancer
These five markers point mainly at the prostate, bowel, pancreas and liver. There is no marker here for skin, kidney, bladder, brain, lymphoma or leukaemia, and no reliable blood marker exists for several of those at all.
A Raised Marker Is Not Proof
Benign causes are common — infection, inflammation, smoking, an enlarged prostate, liver conditions. The panel's job is to flag, not to conclude. That is precisely why a doctor reads all five together with your history rather than reacting to one number.
What This Test Sits Alongside, Not Instead Of
These remain the screening methods with the strongest evidence behind them. A cancer marker panel adds to this picture — it does not replace any part of it.
Used properly, it is worth doing. We will tell you if it is not.
Call our coordinator and describe your situation. If a doctor visit or a different test is the better first step, we will say so — even when that means we do not take a booking.
Why Test With MedCall
A cancer marker result is only as good as the laboratory that produced it and the doctor who reads it. MedCall combines DHA-approved lab processing with an at-home visit and a doctor who explains what your numbers actually mean.
DHA-Approved Laboratories
Every sample is processed at a Dubai Health Authority approved laboratory, on the same analysers a hospital laboratory would use. Regulated testing, not a shortcut.
Free PSA Included, Not Just Total
Many panels measure Total PSA alone. Ours includes Free PSA as well, so a borderline total can be read as a ratio — the detail that most often separates benign enlargement from a result needing review.
Free Doctor Review Included
A doctor reads all five markers together with your history and tells you plainly whether anything needs following up. You are never handed a page of numbers and left to search online at midnight.
Tested at Home, Not a Clinic
A DHA-licensed professional comes to your home, hotel, or office. No clinic queue, no fasting, no half-day off work — and considerably more privacy for a test many men would rather keep to themselves.
Results in 48 Hours
Your private digital report is ready in around two days. Waiting is the hardest part of any test like this, so we keep that window as short as the laboratory process honestly allows.
No Pressure, No Upselling
If a doctor visit is the better first step, or a different panel suits you more, our coordinator will say so. We would rather lose a booking than sell a test that does not help you.

What Your Cancer Marker Result Means
Your report shows each marker as a number against a reference range. That is the easy part. The part that matters — what that number actually means for you, and what comes next — is where the doctor review comes in, and with tumour markers it matters more than almost any other test.
Context
A Number, Never Read Alone
Each marker comes back as a value against its range — and with a doctor's read on what it really means for you, in complete confidence.
Each marker is reported as a value against the laboratory's reference range.
The number tells you where a marker sits against its range — but on its own it tells you very little. A tumour marker is not a diagnosis. A raised marker often has an everyday, non-cancer cause, and a normal marker does not rule anything out — so a value is a prompt for a doctor to look further, never a verdict in itself.
This is exactly why we never just email you a lab sheet. Our doctor reads your marker with your symptoms, history and any examination in mind — explaining, for instance, that a mildly raised PSA is far more often benign prostate enlargement or infection than anything serious — and advising calmly whether it is reassuring, worth repeating, or worth a referral. No alarm, and no false reassurance.
A cancer marker supports a doctor’s assessment — it does not replace it. A raised marker does not mean you have cancer, and a normal one does not rule it out; these tests are one piece of a bigger picture that includes your symptoms, examination and other investigations. The meaning, and the sensible next step, come from a doctor reading it with you — included at no extra cost, explained calmly and clearly, with no alarm and no false reassurance.
Trusted by Men Across Dubai
Booking a cancer marker test is not a casual decision. Here is what men say about how MedCall handled the process — the privacy, the timing, and the conversation afterwards.
Rated 4.9 out of 5 by patients across Dubai for at-home lab testing and care.
Turning fifty made me want a baseline on record. Booked on a Tuesday evening, sampled Wednesday morning at my kitchen table, and the report landed on Friday. Straightforward from start to finish.
What I appreciated most was the doctor call afterwards. He walked through each marker and explained what my numbers meant rather than leaving me to interpret a chart on my own.
The coordinator told me to skip cycling for two days before the sample. Nobody had ever mentioned that to me before, and I ride most mornings. Small detail, clearly a meaningful one.
My father had prostate cancer, so this was on my mind for a while. Discreet, no clinic waiting room, and the whole visit was over in about ten minutes at my apartment.
I asked whether I should also book the bigger panel and they said honestly that it would not add much for my situation. Being talked out of spending more is not something I expected.
Booked it for my wife and myself on the same visit, one nurse, two panels. Both reports came back within the promised window and the follow-up call covered them together.

Because both PSA values are included, your report also allows the free-to-total PSA ratio to be assessed — the detail that most often separates benign prostate enlargement from a result that needs review.

Some markers on the panel run faster than others. The 48-hour window reflects the slowest of the five, so you receive one complete report rather than a trickle of partial results. Booking takes minutes, and same-day sample collection is available across Dubai, 24/7.
No — and any provider who tells you otherwise is overselling. Tumour markers cannot diagnose cancer. A diagnosis requires imaging and, in almost every case, a tissue biopsy.
What the panel gives you is a documented baseline and an early signal. A result outside the expected range tells a doctor that further investigation is worthwhile. A normal result is reassuring but does not rule cancer out, because many cancers never raise these markers, particularly at an early stage.
Used alongside age-appropriate screening and a doctor who knows your history, it is genuinely useful. Used as a replacement for those things, it is not.
No fasting is required for any of the five markers. Eat and drink as normal and book whichever time of day suits you, including evenings and weekends.
There are, however, a few short-term things that can temporarily raise PSA. Your coordinator will run through those with you when you book, so nothing distorts your result.
For 48 hours before your appointment, avoid ejaculation and avoid cycling, spin classes, motorbikes or horse riding. Both can temporarily lift PSA and produce a falsely high reading.
Also tell us when booking if you have recently had a prostate examination, catheter, cystoscopy or biopsy, if you currently have a urine infection, or if you take prostate or hair-loss medication or high-dose biotin supplements. Any of these change how your result should be read.
Check before you bookA raised marker is far more often benign than not. Smoking raises CEA. An enlarged prostate or a urine infection raises PSA. Gallstones raise CA 19.9. Hepatitis or fatty liver raises AFP.
Our doctor reviews all five markers together with your history and calls you. The usual next step is either a repeat test after a few weeks — because a value that settles tells a very different story from one that keeps climbing — or an onward referral for imaging or a specialist.
Ask us about your resultBecause one without the other is much less informative. Total PSA on its own can be raised for many benign reasons, which is why a borderline total causes so much unnecessary worry.
Measuring Free PSA as well allows the free-to-total ratio to be assessed. When total PSA sits in a borderline band, that ratio helps point toward benign enlargement or toward a result needing urology review — and it can spare men an unnecessary biopsy. Many panels at this price measure Total PSA only.
Entirely at your convenience. A DHA-licensed nurse comes to your home, hotel, or office anywhere in Dubai to collect the sample — no clinic visit and no queue. The collection itself takes around 10 minutes using a sterile, single-use kit, and that one sample covers all five markers with no second appointment.
Yes — a doctor review is part of the price. You are never left to decode a page of numbers alone. Our doctor reads all five markers together with your history, explains in plain language what each value means, and tells you clearly whether anything needs following up — or whether nothing does.
Most men consider a first baseline from around 45, or from 40 where there is a family history of prostate, colorectal, liver or pancreatic cancer. A single reading is informative; the same panel repeated in a year is more so, because a trend tells a doctor more than any one value.
If you already have blood in your urine or stool, unexplained weight loss, a lump, or persistent or worsening pain, please see a doctor now rather than waiting on a blood test. This panel also does not replace colonoscopy, low-dose CT screening for heavy smokers, or a physical examination.
Completely confidential, and no referral is required. The sample is collected privately at your home, hotel or office, so there is no clinic reception and no waiting room. Only you receive your report, delivered through a private channel of your choosing — WhatsApp or email — with nothing shared to any third party without your consent.
