What is the CBC Test?
Discover what a Complete Blood Count measures, why it's the most commonly ordered blood test in the world, and how it provides a complete picture of your overall health in a single sample.
Snapshot
Most Common Test
The CBC is the world's most frequently ordered blood test — a foundation of preventive healthcare.
Complete Blood Count — a comprehensive blood test that evaluates the cells circulating in your bloodstream and reveals your overall health status.
CBC (Complete Blood Count) is one of the most fundamental and widely used blood tests in modern medicine. It measures the three main types of cells in your blood — red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets — along with several other key parameters that reflect how well your body is functioning.
A single CBC test can help detect anaemia, infections, immune system disorders, blood-clotting issues, dehydration, and nutritional deficiencies. It is also routinely used as part of general health check-ups, pre-surgical assessments, and to monitor patients undergoing treatment.
The test typically reports values for haemoglobin, haematocrit, RBC count, WBC count, platelet count, and various other indices — giving your doctor a comprehensive view of your blood health in a single, simple report.
What a CBC Actually Measures
Your report will list more than twenty values, which is why most people glance at it and give up. It is far simpler than it looks — it is really six groups, and each one answers a different question.
Red Blood Cells
RBC Count
How many oxygen-carrying cells you have. Too few and your tissues are being short-changed on oxygen — which is why fatigue and breathlessness are the classic symptoms.
Haemoglobin & Haematocrit
Hb · Hct / PCV
The two values that define anaemia. Haemoglobin is the protein that actually carries the oxygen; haematocrit is the share of your blood made up of red cells. These are the numbers a doctor looks at first.
Red Cell Indices
MCV · MCH · MCHC · RDW
The most useful part of the report, and the least explained. These describe the size and colour of your red cells — and that is what points toward the cause of an anaemia rather than just confirming it.
White Blood Cells
WBC Total Count
Your immune system's headcount. A raised total often means your body is fighting something; a low total can mean the opposite, or a marrow that is under-producing.
The Five-Part Differential
Neutrophils · Lymphocytes · Monocytes · Eosinophils · Basophils
Where the detail lives. The mix matters more than the total: neutrophils tend to lead in bacterial infections, lymphocytes in viral ones, and raised eosinophils often point toward allergy or a parasite.
Platelets
Platelet Count · MPV
The cells that stop you bleeding. A low count can explain easy bruising, nosebleeds or gums that bleed when you brush — and a high one is worth a doctor's eye rather than a search engine's.
Why the indices are worth understanding. If your haemoglobin is low, MCV is the value that starts to explain it: smaller-than-normal red cells point one way, larger-than-normal cells point another. That is the difference between an iron problem and a B12 or folate problem — two very different things with the same headline symptom. A CBC narrows it down; a ferritin or B12 test then confirms it. Your MedCall doctor review tells you which, if either, is actually worth doing.
How Your CBC Test Works at Home in Dubai
From first message to doctor-reviewed results — four steps, one home visit, no clinic queue and no fasting. One small tube covers the whole panel.
Step 01
Call or WhatsApp to Book
Call +971 55 850 2472 or send a message. Tell our coordinator why you are testing — tiredness, an infection, a routine check, or a doctor's request — and whether anything else has been asked for alongside it.
Booking confirmed in under 10 minutesStep 02
No Fasting — Just Drink Normally
There is nothing to prepare for a CBC, so eat as usual and book whatever time suits you. One small thing does help though: drink water normally in the hours before your visit. Being dehydrated concentrates the blood and can nudge haemoglobin and haematocrit upward — worth knowing in this climate.
No fasting · evening & weekend slotsStep 03
One Small Sample Taken
A DHA-licensed nurse comes to your home, hotel or office and collects a single EDTA tube using sterile, single-use equipment. The visit takes around ten minutes, and that one tube covers every value on the panel.
About 10 minutes · sterile single-use equipmentStep 04
Same-Day Results & Doctor Review
Your digital report arrives the same day, with a free doctor review. Rather than leaving you to interpret twenty values, the doctor tells you which flags matter, which are normal variation, and whether a follow-up test is genuinely worth doing.
Same-day results · free doctor reviewTired of guessing why you are tired? Book your CBC today.
Our coordinator arranges everything — timing, nurse, results — most patients are booked and confirmed in under 10 minutes. No clinic visit, no fasting, no waiting room.
Is It Just Life in Dubai, or Is Something Actually Off?
Tiredness gets blamed on the heat, the hours and the commute. Sometimes that is genuinely all it is — and sometimes there is a measurable reason sitting in your blood. These are the symptoms a CBC is designed to investigate.
How long it has been going on matters. A week of feeling run down after a virus is expected. Three months of the same tiredness, no matter how much you sleep, is worth a blood test rather than another early night.
Tiredness That Sleep Does Not Fix
Exhausted after eight hours, foggy by mid-afternoon, drained by stairs you used to take easily. Low haemoglobin is one of the few causes of this you can actually confirm rather than guess at.
Breathless, Pale or Dizzy
Getting winded on a short walk, looking washed out, light-headed when you stand up quickly. When these arrive together with fatigue, the red cell values are the first place a doctor looks.
Infections That Keep Coming Back
One thing after another all winter, or a fever that will not settle. The white cell count and its mix show whether your immune system is actively fighting something, and often hint at what kind.
Bruising or Bleeding Easily
Bruises you cannot account for, gums that bleed when you brush, nosebleeds, or cuts that take a long time to stop. The platelet count is the value that explains this.
Heavy Periods and Constant Fatigue
One of the most common causes of iron deficiency in women, and one of the most normalised. If your periods are heavy and you are always tired, those two facts are frequently connected.
A Routine Check or a Doctor's Request
Plenty of CBCs are done with no symptoms at all — annual checks, pre-employment medicals, or because a doctor asked for one. You do not need a reason beyond wanting a baseline.
If you have bleeding you cannot stop, a high fever with confusion or drowsiness, severe breathlessness, or chest pain, that is a medical emergency. Call 998 for an ambulance or go straight to the nearest emergency department. A home visit and a same-day report are the wrong response to any of those — you need to be seen now, and the bloods will be done there. If you call us in that situation we will tell you exactly this.
Recognise Two or Three of These? Start With a CBC.
Tell our coordinator what has been going on and how long for. If a CBC is the sensible first step we will book it, usually same day — and if what you are describing needs a doctor rather than a blood test, we will say so instead.
A DHA Nurse Comes to You
No clinic, no waiting room, no queue. A licensed nurse arrives at your home, hotel or office at a time that suits you, takes a small blood sample in minutes, and the sample is on its way to the lab the same day.
The whole visit is quick and painless — and your complete blood count is back the same day.
A DHA-licensed nurse brings everything needed and draws a small blood sample from your arm with a sterile, single-use kit. Most visits take around ten minutes from knock to done, and you never have to leave home. A CBC on its own needs no fasting, so you can eat and drink normally beforehand.
The timing is straightforward. The sample reaches a DHA-approved laboratory the same day, and your complete blood count is reported the same day too. If the doctor suggests adding a related test — iron studies or inflammatory markers, say — we tell you the timing for those upfront.
The one thing we never rush is what the result means. Your result is read by a doctor — each value read against its reference range and your history, since a single flagged number is rarely the whole story — and you are told clearly what it means and what, if anything, comes next. Never a bare printout to worry over alone.

Who Should Consider a CBC
A CBC is one of the few tests worth doing even when nothing is obviously wrong — it is quick, it is broad, and a normal result is genuinely informative. These are the situations where it earns its place most clearly.
Tiredness Lasting More Than a Few Weeks
The most common reason people book one, and a sensible one. If exhaustion has outlasted a bad week at work, a CBC is the cheapest way to find out whether there is something measurable behind it.
Infections That Keep Returning
A run of illnesses that never quite clears, or a fever with no obvious source. The white cell count and differential tell a doctor whether your body is actively fighting something and often hint at what kind.
Women With Heavy Periods
Menstrual blood loss is the most common cause of iron deficiency in women of reproductive age — and one of the most normalised. If your periods are heavy and you are permanently tired, this test connects the two.
Unexplained Bruising or Bleeding
Bruises with no cause, bleeding gums, frequent nosebleeds. The platelet count is the value that explains most of this — but this is one to discuss with a doctor rather than test and file away.
Vegetarian or Plant-Based Diets
Iron from plants is absorbed less readily than iron from meat, and B12 is genuinely difficult to get without animal products or supplements. A yearly CBC is a sensible habit if you have eaten this way for a while.
Routine Checks & Ongoing Monitoring
Annual health checks, pre-employment medicals, or keeping an eye on a long-term condition or a medication that affects blood counts. A CBC from last year is what makes this year's result meaningful.
What to Test Alongside a CBC
A CBC tells you a count is off. These are the tests that tell you why — and because they run from the same appointment, adding one does not mean a second visit or a second needle in a fortnight's time.
You do not need all of these, and we will not suggest you do. Which one makes sense depends on your symptoms and what the CBC actually shows — and sometimes the honest answer is none. If you are unsure, start with the CBC alone and let the doctor review tell you whether anything further is worth doing.
Ferritin & Iron
AED 189 & 99 · the usual next stepBy far the most common follow-up. Ferritin measures your iron stores — and stores run down long before haemoglobin drops, so ferritin can be low while your CBC still looks normal. If you are tired with a borderline CBC, this is usually the test that explains it.
Vitamin B12 & Folate
AED 179 each · when MCV is highThe other side of the anaemia question. If your red cells came back larger than normal, B12 and folate are what you check next. Worth considering as a routine yearly test if you eat little or no meat, where B12 is genuinely hard to get from diet alone.
ESR
AED 99 · when inflammation is the questionWhere a CBC hints at inflammation without pinning it down, ESR gives a broad measure of how much is going on. Non-specific by design — it will not name the cause, but paired with a white cell picture it helps a doctor judge whether something active needs chasing.
Thyroid & Vitamin D
TSH AED 149 · Vitamin D AED 249For when the CBC comes back completely clean and you are still exhausted. An underactive thyroid and low vitamin D both cause the same flat, heavy tiredness, and neither shows up on a blood count. This is where the search usually goes next.
Adding a Test Changes What Collection Costs
A CBC on its own is under AED 299, so home collection is charged at AED 49. Once your booking passes 299 that charge disappears — which means an add-on costs less than its list price suggests.
Not sure what to add? Do not add anything yet.
Book the CBC, read the doctor review, and decide from there. If the answer turns out to be that nothing further is needed, that is the outcome we would rather give you than a longer invoice.
Why Test With MedCall
A CBC is a standardised test — the analyser does not care who booked it. What differs between providers is how quickly you get the result, whether anyone explains it, and what happens if something needs following up.
DHA-Approved Laboratories
Every sample is processed at a Dubai Health Authority approved laboratory, on the same analysers a hospital laboratory would use. Regulated testing, not a shortcut.
Results the Same Day
Same day, not next week. A CBC is often ordered because someone is worried about something now — waiting several days for a result that takes a machine minutes to produce is the part nobody enjoys, so we do not build it in.
A Doctor Reads It, Not Just a PDF
This is the part that actually differs between providers. Twenty values with a couple flagged high or low is not an answer — it is a prompt to start searching. Our doctor tells you which flags matter, which are ordinary variation, and what to do next.
Add Ferritin or B12 to the Same Visit
If you already suspect iron or B12 is the issue, say so when booking and it is collected in the same appointment. One nurse, one visit — rather than finding out a week later that you need another test and another needle.
No Clinic, No Queue, No Fasting
A DHA-licensed nurse comes to your home, hotel or office at a time you choose, including evenings and weekends. The visit takes around ten minutes and there is nothing to prepare beforehand.
No Pressure, No Upselling
If your CBC comes back clean and nothing further is warranted, that is what you will be told. We would rather send you away with a normal result and no invoice than sell you a panel you did not need.

What Your CBC Result Means
Your report shows each value — haemoglobin, white cells, platelets and more — against its reference range. That is the easy part. The part that matters — what a flagged value actually means for you, and what comes next — is where the doctor review comes in.
Context
A Value, Read in Context
Each value comes back against its reference range — and with a doctor's read on what it means for you.
Each value is reported against the laboratory's reference range for your age and sex.
A high or low flag tells you a value sits outside the usual range — but not, on its own, the whole story. Many mild flags are normal variation or a temporary effect, and one value is read alongside the others rather than in isolation. That is why a flag is a starting point, read in context, not a verdict.
This is exactly why we do not just email you a lab sheet. Our doctor reads your counts together — explaining which flags matter and which do not, for example whether a low haemoglobin points to anaemia or a raised white-cell count fits a recent infection — and advising whether a value is worth repeating or looking into further.
A CBC is read as a picture, not a single number. A mild high or low flag is often normal variation or a passing effect, and the counts are always read together and against your history — a flag on its own is not a diagnosis. The meaning, and the sensible next step, come from a doctor reading it with you, included at no extra cost, and explained in plain terms.
What Dubai Says About Getting a Straight Answer
A CBC is a simple test. What patients tell us they actually value is how quickly it came back, and the fact that somebody sat down and explained what the numbers meant instead of emailing a chart.
DHA-licensed nurses · DHA-approved labs · 24/7 across DubaiRated 4.9 out of 5 by patients across Dubai for at-home lab testing, sample collection and nursing care.
My doctor wanted bloods before an appointment two days later and I had no time to sit in a clinic. Nurse came at nine in the morning, the report was with me before the end of the day. I walked into that appointment with the results already printed.
Two values on my report were flagged and I had already spent an hour on Google convincing myself of the worst. The doctor called and went through what each one actually meant and why neither was a concern on its own. That call was the whole reason I would use them again.
I mentioned on the phone that I had been exhausted for months and they suggested adding ferritin to the same appointment rather than waiting to see. One visit, one nurse, and I had the fuller picture the same day instead of booking a second draw a fortnight later.
Everything came back within range, which I half expected to feel like a waste. The doctor pointed out it had ruled out the obvious causes and suggested where to look next — which was more useful than another month of wondering.
My mother needs bloods every few months and getting her to a clinic had become a whole morning's operation. Now the same nurse comes to the apartment and it is done in ten minutes. She is far more relaxed about it than she used to be.
I called ready to book the biggest panel they had. The coordinator asked a few questions and said a standard blood count was almost certainly enough for what I was describing, and to add anything else only if it showed something. Not the conversation I expected.

CBC Test in Dubai — Frequently Asked Questions
Some of these come from people deciding whether to book. Just as many come from people already holding a report and trying to work out what it says. Both are answered here.
Can’t find your question? Call us free on +971 55 850 2472A complete blood count measures the three cell types in your blood, from one small tube — more than twenty values in total.
Those are: your red cells (RBC count, haemoglobin, haematocrit and the red cell indices MCV, MCH, MCHC and RDW); your white cells (total count plus a five-part differential of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils, in both percentage and absolute terms); and your platelets (count and MPV).
Book a CBC at homeThe CBC itself is AED 199. Home sample collection is charged at AED 49 on bookings under AED 299, so a CBC on its own comes to AED 248 all-in. That includes the nurse visit, DHA-approved laboratory processing, a same-day digital report and a free doctor review.
Once a booking passes AED 299 the collection charge does not apply. So adding ferritin, for example, brings the total to AED 388 with no collection charge at all — which is why an add-on often costs less than its list price suggests.
Get a price confirmation nowSame day. A CBC is one of the faster tests a laboratory runs, and your digital report is sent via WhatsApp or email, followed by a doctor review to walk you through it.
Sample collection is available across Dubai 24/7, including evenings and weekends. If you are booking late in the day and need the result by a particular time, say so when you call and the coordinator will tell you honestly whether that is achievable.
No. A standalone CBC needs no fasting at all — eat and drink normally and book whichever time suits you.
One small thing does help: drink water as you normally would in the hours beforehand. Dehydration concentrates the blood and can nudge haemoglobin and haematocrit upward, which in this climate is worth knowing. If a doctor has ordered other tests alongside the CBC, such as glucose or a lipid profile, those may require fasting — check when you book.
These are the values people search for most after reading a report, and they are simpler than they look.
MCV is the average size of your red cells. MCH is the average amount of haemoglobin inside each one, and MCHC is how concentrated that haemoglobin is. RDW describes how much your red cells vary in size from one another. MPV is the average size of your platelets.
Together the first four describe the size and colour of your red cells — and that is what starts to point toward the cause of an anaemia rather than just confirming one exists.
There is no single set of numbers, which is exactly why we do not print one here. Haemoglobin ranges differ between men and women. Children have their own intervals. Pregnancy shifts several values, and so does living at altitude. Different laboratory analysers also use slightly different intervals.
The only range that applies to you is the one printed alongside your own result. Comparing your figure to a number found online is the most common way people frighten themselves over a perfectly normal report.
Low haemoglobin is what defines anaemia — there is less oxygen-carrying protein in your blood than expected. That is usually what explains fatigue, breathlessness on stairs, pallor and light-headedness.
What it does not tell you is why. Low iron, low B12, low folate, ongoing blood loss and several chronic conditions can all produce a low haemoglobin, and they look broadly similar on a CBC alone. The red cell indices narrow it — and a ferritin or B12 test usually settles it.
Ask about your resultUsually not, and here is why. A reference range is built to cover the large majority of healthy people — which means a small proportion of perfectly well people fall outside it by definition. With more than twenty values on one report, the odds of at least one sitting slightly high or low are considerable.
What matters is which value, by how much, and whether it fits your symptoms. A marginal figure with nothing else going on is very often normal variation. That judgement is the point of the doctor review, rather than something to work out from a search engine at midnight.
It narrows the question rather than answering it — and that is what a good first test should do. A CBC shows that a count is outside the expected range. It does not show why.
That is not a weakness. It is broad, quick and inexpensive relative to what it rules in and out, which is precisely why doctors order it before anything more targeted. Once it points somewhere, a second test usually settles the cause.
Often nothing — start with the CBC and let the result decide. If you already suspect something specific, these are the usual companions: ferritin and iron (AED 189 and 99) when tiredness or anaemia is the question, vitamin B12 and folate (AED 179 each) if your red cells came back larger than normal or you eat little meat, and TSH or vitamin D (AED 149 and 249) when the CBC is clean but the fatigue is not explained.
Anything added is collected in the same appointment, so there is no second visit and no second needle a fortnight later.
It can be arranged in many cases. Because suitability depends on the child's age and circumstances, speak to our team when booking and the doctor will advise.
Worth knowing: children have their own reference intervals, which differ from adult ranges and change as they grow. A result should always be read against a paediatric range, and doing the collection at home in familiar surroundings is usually far easier on a child than a clinic visit.
A doctor review is part of the price, and no referral is required. Twenty-odd values with a couple flagged is not an answer on its own — the doctor tells you which flags matter, which are ordinary variation, and whether anything further is genuinely worth doing.
